We are all huge fans of spray tans over here at The Beauty Studio! There's something about having a tan that is an instant mood booster for us and our clients. Since we love to preach about the importance of skincare and wearing a daily SPF, it was an obvious choice to offer spray tanning in our salon. Let's talk about proper prep, the shade options we have available, the organic line we use and how to get your custom spray tan to last the longest!
Preparation for a sunless tan
There are a few basic rules to follow to prepare for your spray tan appointment.
Exfoliate! - Use a loofa or a body scrub to exfoliate any dry patches. Shave within 24-48 hours before your appointment. Try not to shave right before the appointment, the spray may sit in any open pores causing some dark freckles on the skin.
Bare Skin - Do not wear any makeup, perfumes, lotions, deodorant or jewelry to the appointment. If you are coming right from work we do have makeup remover you can use!
Protect your hair - We will provide you with hair ties and a hairnet is you want to protect your hair during the appointment, so no need to worry about that!
What do I wear to the appointment?
During the appointment what you choose to wear is completely up to you. In my experience, clients tend to go topless in the summer to avoid tan lines and wear a bikini in the winter months. If you have a special occasion you are getting the tan for I typically suggest to go topless to avoid any tan lines showing. Some clients choose the completely nude option, honestly, it's whatever you prefer. My goal is to make you feel completely comfortable and give you a bomb ass spray tan, so what you choose to wear ( or not wear 🤷🏻♀️) is totally your call. We also provide disposable feet protectors to cover the bottoms of your feet.
I suggest wearing baggy dark clothing to and from your appointment. The solution only takes 60 Seconds to dry down however it's better to be cautious. The solution will not stain your clothing unless you wear them multiple times to the appointments.
What to expect during the appointment.
There are a few preparation things that I will help you with before we start your tan. The first is I will spray a PH Balancing mist lightly all over your skin. This moisture-retaining spray will balance out the PH in the skin, perfect for after-work appointments. This helps keep the application even, removes oils, makeup, and other daily buildups. Improves spray tan life by 20-30%. I will also give you some barrier cream to use, this is a preventative lotion that can be used on the drier areas of the skin - elbows, kneecaps, and ankles - to help ensure an even application.
Once you are prepped the spray tan begins! I will guide you every step of the way. I will explain exactly how to stand, where to place your hands and feet and when to move to the next pose! I will warn you now, the solution is chilly, but the good news is the appointment is only 10 minutes long!
How do I know which color to pick and will I be orange?
You will never leave your appointment orange! NEVER! I will ask you a few questions to determine the best shade for you, I have a very subtle tan to 'just got back from the Bamahas' deep tan! I also have a special blend with a lavender undertone, this is ideal for anyone with pink tones in their skin they are looking to even out. I find myself mixing a small amount of this into everyone's solution because it looks sooooo good. The line we carry is completely organic, natural and does not have the typical self-tan scent, so not only will you leave looking good but feeling and smelling good too!
Let's talk additives!!
We have a few different options to add to your spray tan solution to make your experience even more customized.
Scents - We are always adding new scents to our collection, our absolute fav is pineapple! These are a great way to feel like you just left a tropical vacation while your tan develops.
Skin Care - The 'Skin Firming' drops are a cutting edge formula designed to tone and tighten the skin. This spray tan additive will attack cellulite where applied. It contains caffeine extract to dehydrate fat cells making skin appear smoother and more firm, silica to maintain the firmness of the skin making it smooth and taut and glycerin, a natural humectant that draws in moisture from the air to penetrate the skin for deeper hydration of the outermost layer of the skin. The 'Anti Aging' drops are a revolutionary formula that aids in both the prevention and reduction of the skin’s aging process. This solution will tighten the wrinkles on the skin, giving a beautiful, refreshing, younger look to your skin.
Just for fun - The 'Opalescent Shimmer' drops will give your sunless tan a glowing effect! The Opalescent drops are perfect for clients that want a subtle shimmer on top of their sunless tan! These drops can also be applied with distilled water as its own service! You can add multiple drops to the service for only $5 each!
How do I take care of my spray tan?
The processing time for each solution is 6-8 hours. Many clients choose to sleep in the solution which is absolutely an option! Our spray tan easily washes out of clothes and sheets! While the tan is developing, wear loose-fitting clothing and avoid any activities that will cause you to sweat. (the perfect excuse to skip the gym!) Once it is time to rinse your tan, simply hop in the shower. We recommend skipping your loofa or body washes that contain alcohol or that would exfoliate that skin. Lightly towel or air dry- no rubbing! The best way to get the most wear out of your tan is to keep your skin as hydrated as possible. Lotion will be your best friend! We do carry a tan extending lotion in the salon that not only rehydrates the skin but contains a hint of DHA to keep your tan fresh and even for days longer! This retails for only $20
